Brian Woods’ Northlanders to Come to and End with Issue #50

It’s been a week of new beginnings for many titles over at DC. However, it looks like it is the end of the line for one of my favourite Vertigo titles, as Brian Woods has confirmed the rumour that his Northlanders series has been cancelled, due to lower than desired sales, and will come to an end with March’s issue #5o.

Wood’s says that next week’s one-shot “Thor’s Daughter” (w/ Marian Churchland) and the nine-part “Icelandic Trilogy” (w/ Paul Azaceta) will still happen as planned, and he asks that retailers please not cut their orders, and that readers please don’t cancel their subs, because “no story is getting cut short, nothing will be left hanging.  As always with NORTHLANDERS, you can jump in at the start of any story, including the ones listed above.”

“I’m not going to eulogize the series yet and start thanking everyone, since I have the next nine or ten months to do that” says Woods.  “While this news sucks, I consider it a triumph for everyone responsible that our depressing, often cerebral comic book about Vikings and history is lasting FIFTY ISSUES.  It feels appropriately epic, and the eventual seven volumes of the series will hopefully stay in print forever (or close to that).”

He also clarifies that he doesn’t think the cancellation of the series has anything to do with the fact that his exclusive contract with DC came to an end last week. However, he does confirm that he has not been given a role in the big DC reboot, but says that he thinks that it is an exciting idea, and wishes everyone the best.

Well, I’m very sad to see the series come to an end, especially seeing as Woods’ other ongoing series, DMZ will also be ending shortly! I certainly hope that there are other projects on the horizon for him, because he is a wonderful writer, and a strong proponent of creator-owned comics. Is wish him luck with all of his future endeavors, and will be sure to read his books wherever he ends up!
