From the press release:

The June edition of Diamond Comic Distributors’ PREVIEWS catalog arrives in comic shops, hobby stores, and other direct market outlets on June 1 and features comic books, graphic novels, toys, and additional pop culture products scheduled to go on sale beginning August 2011.

The front cover of the June PREVIEWS is dedicated to Dark Horse Comics’ ANGEL & FAITH #1, the much-anticipated debut of the new ongoing series that picks up where Buffy Season 8 left off. Written by Christos Gage and illustrated by Rebekah Isaacs, the new title finds Angel seeking ways to atone for his ill-conceived misdeeds … and the only person who may be able to help him do that is Faith. Readers who enjoyed the original TV Buffy and the comic titles that continued the supernatural action won’t want to miss this new story featuring two of the mythos’ most popular characters.

On the back cover, DC Comics/Vertigo presents a thrilling new chapter in the FABLES saga with FABLES: WEREWOLVES OF THE HEARTLAND. This original graphic novel for mature readers – written by series creator Bill Willingham and illustrated by Jim Fern, Craig Hamilton, and Ray Snyder – follows Bigby Wolf as he searches for a new location for Fabletown. Then, he walks into a small town that seems to be populated by mysterious werewolves who recognize and admire him. But when they also capture and cage him, the stage is set for a confrontation that no Fables fan will be able to put down.

June PREVIEWS Features

Movie (and TV) Month:
With summer fare like Captain America and Green Lantern being eagerly awaited by mainstream moviegoers, it’s obvious that comic book movies – and the comics that inspired them — are more popular than ever. The June PREVIEWS looks back at the comics that have already been adapted to the large and small screens, and ahead to the many comic-based movies and TV programs still to come. Cool interviews with Greg Rucka on Whiteout, and Phil Hester and Alex Ross about their upcoming Bionic Man Series. Plus a look at the best graphic novels to read after you’ve seen movies!

PREVIEWS Exclusive Wear:
This month’s line-up of sweet Ts available only to comic book specialty shops features a variety of comic, video game, and pop culture designs including Marvel vs. Capcom: “Size Them Up”, Kingdom Hearts: “Hearts Ablaze”, Godzilla ’54, X-Men: “Sentinel Steal”, Star Wars: “Solve the Death Star”, and Portal 2: “Do Not Inhale Fumes”! You won’t find these anywhere else other than a comic book or hobby shop in your area.

FLIPside: Free Comic Book Day 2011 Scrapbook:
The 10th anniversary of comic fans’ unofficial national holiday is celebrated with anecdotes from fans who visited participating comic shops, photos showing how stores welcomed customers to the big event, and more!

Indie Edge:
Greg RuckaPREVIEWS profiles the author of a dozen bestselling novels and numerous acclaimed comic series, including DC Comics’ Detective Comics and Batwoman, Oni Press’ Stumptown, Whiteout, and Queen & Country, and offers readers a list of recommendations by—and from – this master storyteller.

Plus: Staff Picks, our Top 100 Comics and Bestseller Charts, and much more!

All this and more is waiting in the June issue of PREVIEWS, which goes on sale at your local comic shop or specialty store on Wednesday, June 1 at a cover price of $4.50. Ask your comic shop retailer on how you can qualify for a free issue. Pre-orders are due to your comic shop by June 18th for merchandise in this issue.

From the press release:

April 15, 2011, MILWAUKIE, OR: The long awaited book containing the true story of the capture of what many consider to be one of the most infamous criminals in history has brought on artist, Jonathan Case to capture the essence of the time!

Case is a member of Portland’s Periscope Studio, the largest collective of comics artists and writers in the U.S. Many of his paintings hang within the local McMenamins eaterys. Jonathan’s most recent work was showcased in his critically acclaimed book, Dear Creature, about an atomic sea mutant in the 60’s whose poet soul is at odds with his tendency to eat people.

Case will be appearing at Stumptown Comics Fest, April 16-17th.

Interviews with artist Jonathan Case are available immediately.

About the book: Throughout the 1980s, the highest priority of Seattle-area police was the apprehension of the Green River Killer, the man responsible for the murders of dozens of women. In 1990, with the body count numbering at least forty-eight, the case was put in the hands of a single detective, Tom Jensen. After twenty years, when the killer was finally captured with the help of DNA technology, Jensen spent 180 days interviewing Gary Leon Ridgway in an effort to learn his most closely held secrets—an epic confrontation with evil that proved as disturbing and surreal as can be imagined.

Written by Jensen’s own son, acclaimed entertainment writer Jeff Jensen, Green River Killer: A True Detective Story presents the ultimate insider’s account of America’s most prolific serial killer.

How does Diamond calculate the charts? It all starts at the comic book shop.

Data for Diamond’s sales charts — which include the monthly market shares and all top product charts — are compiled by Diamond Comic Distributors from a universe of over 3,500 accounts, comprised of comic book specialty shops and other merchant stores and buyers. The shops are primarily located in North America, with a percentage of sales also to international stores and buyers located throughout the world. The account base includes not only brick-and-mortar comic book specialty shops, but also Internet stores, chain stores, and other specialty stores.

Unit and dollars sales are calculated based upon orders invoiced and shipped to Diamond accounts during any given month, which comprises initial pre-orders, advance reorders, and reorders, minus any copies that are received back from a title marked as returnable.

About the Diamond Sales Index: The Sales Index of selected monthly Best Seller Charts is presented as a comparative tool for retailers and publishers. It presents Diamond’s monthly sales for individual titles in relation to Diamond’s total sales for the issue of DC Comics’ monthly Batman comic book. (Batman is used as the control title — with a value of 100 — because sales of Batman usually remain relatively stable.) This allows for easy comparison to other titles and helps retailers gauge their orders for all other titles. This formula is only a guide, other factors may impact a titles’ ability to sell in certain locations and clientele.

From the press release:

Hughie embarks on a journey to uncover the World War II origins of the The Boys in The Boys #52, the first part of the “Barbary Coast” storyline from writer Garth Ennis and artist John McCrea, giving Dynamite Entertainment the best-selling Non-Premier Comic in March. Overall, Dynamite had a strong March, taking the top five spots and six of the top ten on the Non-Premier sales charts.

Other publishers in the top ten include Avatar with two books, led by Alan Moore’s Neonomicon #4 at #8, and BOOM! Studios, also with two books, led by Clive Barker’s Hellraiser #1 at #6.

March’s top-selling Non-Premier Graphic Novel to comic shops was Viz Media’s Bleach Volume 34, which was also the month’s top-selling manga to retailers. Viz had a strong month overall, with three different titles placing in the top-ten.

Seven other publishers also charted in the top ten Non-Premier Graphic Novels for March. Bongo Comics had Simpsons Comics Meltdown at #4, Fantagraphics Books had Prince Valiant Volume 3: 1941-1942 at #7, Harper Collins had Cowboys and Aliens at #10, The Hero Initiative had Archie: 50 Times an American Icon at #8, Humanoids had Weapons of the Metabarons at #3 (which was also the month’s top-selling Small Press Graphic Novel), Oni Press had Stumptown Volume 1 at #6, and Radical Publishing had Time Bomb at #5.

How does Diamond calculate the charts? It all starts at the comic book shop.

Data for Diamond’s sales charts – which include the monthly market shares and all top product charts – are compiled by Diamond Comic Distributors from a universe of over 3,500 accounts, comprised of comic book specialty shops and other merchant stores and buyers.

(Batman is used as the control title – with a value of 100 – because sales of Batman generally remain stable.) This allows for easy comparison to other titles and helps retailers gauge their orders for all other titles. This formula is only a guide, other factors may impact a titles’ ability to sell in certain locations and clientele.

From the press release:

Mike Carey and Peter Gross’ acclaimed fantasy series The Unwritten for DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint gave the the publisher the best-selling graphic novel in March with the third volume of the series, The Unwritten Volume 3: Dead Man’s Knock, which revealed more of the secrets and mysteries surrounding Tommy Taylor.

In total, DC Comics had five of March’s top ten best-selling graphic novels. The Batman and Robin: Batman Reborn trade paperback, collecting the first six issues of Grant Morrison’s best-selling Batman and Robin, ranked #2. Batman: Time and the Batman, the hardcover collection of Morrison’s Batman #700, plus Morrison and Tony Daniel’s Batman #701 and #702, ranked #4. Batman Beyond: Hush Beyond, collecting the mini-series based on the fan-favorite animated series, ranked #5. Finally, Chris Roberson and Michael Allred’s iZombie Volume 1: Dead to the World, the collected edition of the first five issues of the acclaimed Vertigo series, ranked #6.

Marvel Comics had two graphic novels in the top ten for March. Their top book, Takio, is the all-ages graphic novel from Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming, and it ranked #3 for the month. Also in the top ten was the collected edition of The Thanos Imperative; the cosmic story from Dan Abnett, Andy Lanning, Miguel Sepulveda, and Brad Walker ranked #10.

Image Comics also had two graphic novels in the top ten. Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead Volume 1: Days Gone Bye contined its strong sales and ranked #8 for the month. Morning Glories Volume 1: For a Better Future, collecting the first six issues of Nick Spencer’s acclaimed series, ranked #9.

Rounding out the top ten was Viz Media with Bleach Volume 34 at #7. Bleach was also the month’s top-selling manga to comics specialty retailers.

Among premier publishers, Dark Horse Comics’ top-selling graphic novel in March was the Star Wars Omnibus: At War with the Empire Volume 1, a collection of stories set in George Lucas’ universe told from the point-of-view of the Empire; the volume ranked #25 for the month. IDW Publishing brought a long out-of-print Dungeons & Dragons story back into print with the Dungeons & Dragons: Forgotten Realms Volume 1 graphic novel from Jeff Grubb and Rags Morales, and the volume ranked #45 for the month.

This information may not be reproduced in any format without the express permission of Diamond Comic Distributors.

For retailers, Diamond offers the Top 300 Comics and Top 300 Graphic Novels sales charts on the Diamond Tools page of the Diamond Retailer Services website to provide more information about the industry’s top selling publications.

(Batman is used as the control title – with a value of 100 – because sales of Batman usually remain relatively stable.) This allows for easy comparison to other titles and helps retailers gauge their orders for all other titles. This formula is only a guide, other factors may impact a titles’ ability to sell in certain locations and clientele.
