McG Launches New Comics Imprint To Create Transmedia Properties
Deadline.com has the scoop that the movie & television writer/producer/director known as McG (Joseph McGinty Nichol) has launched a new comic and graphic novel imprint, with the intention of creating transmedia properties out of original ideas.
The imprint’s first title will be Haunted City, which is based on an idea by screenwriter Chap Taylor. Taylor will write the comic with Peter Johnson of Wonderland Sound and Vision. The series will be published by Wonderland Sound and Vision in association with Aspen Comics.
The comic is said to be a dark, supernatural story set in major cities around the world, with New York as the venue for the first issue.
The project will simultaneously be developed into a movie script that McG hopes to direct, as well as a TV pilot that Wonderland will executive produce. A video game is also in the works.
This won’t be Wonderland’s first foray into the world of comics, as comic book versions of its TV shows Supernatural, Chuck and Human Target, have all be published through DC Comics’ defunct Wildstorm imprint.
Hmm… I’m not sure how I feel about this. On the one hand, it could be an interesting way to bring new readers into comics, from the movie, TV, and video game world. On the other hand, the whole transmedia thing make me feel a bit dirty. It’s all a bit like popularism, if you ask me - by trying to appeal to a wider base, you tend to lose a lot of the quality of the story. I don’t know, it’s probably just the indie comics lover in me!
