SPX Announces First 2011 Guests: Woodring, Rugg, Chast, and Telnaes
From the press release:
SPX is pleased to announce that Roz Chast, Jim Woodring, Ann Telnaes and Jim Rugg will be guests at SPX 2011!
Roz Chast is a long-time contributor of cartoons and covers to The New Yorker. She has published ten volumes of her cartoon work from The New Yorker and other magazines such as Scientific American, Redbook and Mother Jones. In addition to her New Yorker output, she collaborated with the comedian/actor Steve Martin on the book The Alphabet from A to Y, With the Bonus Letter Z! and last year released her children’s book Too Busy Marco. This will be Ms. Chast’s first appearance at SPX and her first appearance at a convention since 2004.
Jim Woodring is the creator of the surreal long-running comic series Frank and Jim. Frank will be appearing in his second full length graphic novel Congress of the Animals (a followup to last year’s Weathercraft), due to be released in May 2011 from his long-time publisher, Fantagraphics. Mr. Woodring is also an illustrator and designs his own toys.
Ann Telnaes has won the Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning for her work in The Washington Post. A few years ago, she moved from single panel cartoons to creating animated editorial cartoons, using her prior background as an animator for a number of companies around the world. SPX is honored to host her at her first time comic-related convention.
Jim Rugg is the co-writer and artist for the multiple Glyph Comic Award nominated graphic novel Afrodisiac from AdHouse Books. At last year’s SPX, Mr. Rugg won the Ignatz Award for his mini-comic Rambo 3.5. He also is an illustrator, working for such venues as VH1 and New York Magazine.

About the Show
SPX 2011 will be held the weekend of September 10 and 11, 2011 at the Marriott Bethesda North Hotel & Conference Center in Bethesda, MD, just one mile outside the nation’s capital, Washington DC. In its fifteenth year SPX now serves as the preeminent showcase for the exhibition of independent comic books and the discovery of new creative talent.
SPX will bring together over 400 artists and publishers to meet their readers, booksellers, distributors, and each other. SPX will be open to the public September 10th from 11am Saturday, and run through 7pm that evening. The celebration continues Sunday from noon to 6pm. In addition, expect great programming all weekend long for you to enjoy!
SPX 2011 marks the fifteenth annual presentation of The Ignatz Awards for outstanding achievement in comics and cartooning. The Ignatz, named after George Herriman’s brick-wielding mouse, recognizes outstanding work that challenges popular notions of what comics can achieve, both as an artform and as a means of personal expression. The Ignatz is a festival prize, the first such of the United States comic book industry. Winners will be determined by ballot during SPX and presented at the gala Ignatz Awards ceremony.
As with every year profits from SPX will go to support the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, protecting the First Amendment rights of comic book readers and professionals.
