Disney Drops Radical & Joseph Kosinski’s ‘Oblivion’; Now Being Shopped Around Studios
Back in August, we shared the news that Disney had acquired the rights to do a film adaptation of Oblivion, based on Radical Publishing’s illustrated novel created by Tron: Legacy director, Joseph Kosinski, written by Arvid Nelson, and with illustrations by Andrée Wallin.
Deadline.com are now reporting that Disney have now dropped the project. Disney gave no reason for dropping the project, but Deadline have heard that the reason Disney stopped work after developing the script and going through a soft prep process is that the studio decided that a gritty PG-13 science fiction action project didn’t fit into the Disney mandate.
The film is now being shopped around different studios to find a backer. It shouldn’t take too long for it to get picked up again, as there was a heated auction between studios when the property was originally up for grabs last summer. Interested parties are said to include Paramount, Fox-based Chernin Entertainment and Universal.
