A Look at Chris Ware’s Poster for the Movie Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives
NYmag.com has the news that Chris Ware has designed a poster for Palme d’Or winning movie Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives.
Uncle Boonmee is a 2010 Thai film directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul. It won the Palme d’Or at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. The film centers on the last days in the life of its title character. Together with his loved ones – including the ghost of his dead wife and his lost son who has returned in a non-human form – Boonmee explores his past lives as he contemplates the reasons for his illness.
According to the article, Ware says that he “wanted to get at both the transcendent solemnity of the film while keeping some sense of its loose, very unpretentious accessibility.” Adding that, “This being a poster, however — and even worse, me not really being a designer — I realized it also had to be somewhat punchy and strange, so as to draw viewers in and pique their curiosity without, hopefully, insulting their intelligence.”
Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives will premiere on March 2nd in New York.
