San Diego Comic-Con International Registration to Begin on February 5th (Hopefully!)

This afternoon, the organizers of San Diego Comic-Con International 2011 (what a mouthful) announced that registration will open, for the third, and hopefully final time, on February 5th.

Now it should be noted that the first two attempts to launch registration went catastrophically wrong, causing their entire registration system to collapse under the weight of incoming requests (see here, and here). After these two failed attempts, the organizers decided to try out a new registration system, by selling a test run of 1,000 4-day badges without Preview Night, to make sure this plan would actually work (see here). They reported that that test worked out pretty well, and they have therefore decided to go ahead and try to launch full registration. It remains o be seen though, whether the new system will be able to come with the sheer masses of people wanting to buy con badges, as interesting in the con seems to have grown exponentially with each year.

When registration was first announced, I was pretty eager to get a ticket, but I’ve actually lost interest now. I’m more interested in comics than movies & TV, and SDCC seems to have made a massive shift toward these much more popular media. Add to that the fact that I hate being jostled around in a large crowd, which SDCC is famed for. Instead, I’ll be going to Emerald City Comic Con, in Seattle, which has a fantastic line-up of creators attending, and hasn’t succumb to the Movie/TV convention takeover bid!
