Marvel Announces Kieron Gillen as New Sole Writer of Uncanny X-Men
I have to say, I saw this one coming a mile away. I remember when Ed Brubaker had been writing Uncanny for a while, Marvel announced that it would be co-written by Brubaker and Fraction. About three months later, they announced that Brubaker was going off to bigger things, and Fraction would be the sole writer. Then, a year and a half after Fraction took over, he got Gillen as a co-writer. I knew then that he’d be going solo pretty soon, especially after the announcement that Fraction would be writing Fear Itself, and sure enough, here we are! If Gillen gets a co-writer in a year or two, you can be sure that he’ll be heading off to bigger projects a couple of months after the announcement.
Huge congratulations to Kieron though, it’s a hell of an achievement. I’ve been watching his meteoric rise in the comic industry over the last couple of years, and think this gig is well deserved.
As a side note, this means that three of the X-Men titles are now written by British people, with Mike Carey over on X-Men Legacy, and Warren Ellis on Astonishing X-Men. In addition, Simon Spurrier seems to be sneaking his way in too, with a couple of X-Men one shots under his belt. Come on Marvel, give Si a full time gig, we want all the X-men titles to be written by Brits!
