Beasts of Burden Hardcover Sells Out and Gets a Second Printing!
Last week, word came in that the hardcover collection of Beasts of Burden had sold out its initial print run and had already been rushed back to print. We’ve seen a lot of praise heaped on this series over at Dark Horse HQ, so it’s fantastic to see sales reflecting critical acclaim for Evan Dorkin and Jill Thompson’s adventure/mystery/horror series! I could rave about this excellent series, but I think the aforementioned compliments from critics might better explain why this series has met with such success.
“Beasts of Burden is a narrative completely comfortable in its own fur. It’s a comic that feels like nothing else on the stands because it’s the talking animal film every adult secretly wants to see. It’s ‘Homeward Bound’ with monster slaying, ‘Watership Down’ minus moralizing, ‘The Adventures of Milo and Otis’ sans Dudley Moore. By balancing a cast of dogs with personalities independent of—but not divorced from—their breed archetypes, Beasts balances humor, heart and horror and fosters the contrast necessary to elevate a genre.” -MTV Splash Page
“Sharply written and beautifully drawn, the full-length mini-series was one of our favorite comics of the last year, effortlessly moving from slapstick comedy to genuine horror (there’s a page in #2 that still creeps us out) without ever feeling jumbled or confused.” -Comics Alliance
“Loaded with fun in every panel, this series has massive crossover appeal for those who enjoy horror, humor, and stories about endearing animal characters. This gorgeous hardcover edition contains the short stories that introduced the characters, along with the 2009 miniseries and supplemental behind-the-scenes material with notes by Dorkin. A stunner.” -Publisher’s Weekly
“Dorkin’s script captures the well-meaning, dopey sentiments we attribute to our dogs and cats’ thoughts, and Thompson’s art finds a middle ground between storybook sweetness and EC Comics chills. It’s a lot of fun, and ideal for kids who don’t mind a little gore and ghosts with their adorable animals.” -The Onion AV Club
“Dorkin and Thompson deserve praise for giving us something that feels like a totally new concept amid the rather crowded field of comic-book paranormal investigators.” -Newsarama
“A bold, inventive and timely horror series.”-The Comics Journal
