‘Captain America Movie’ to Co-Star The Invaders!
Lots of details are leaking out about the plot of Marvel Studios’ The First Avenger: Captain America. First, Director Joe Johnston revealed that the villain of the movie would be the Red Skull (see here), then he revealed that the movie will be set during World War II, and that Steve Rogers would be a USO Performer at the start of the movie (see here). Now, in an interview with Chud.com, he has revealed that the Invaders will be a major presence in the movie, stating that ‘They’ll be in the entire second half”.
Johnston did not reveal which heroes would be on his Invaders, but did let slip that their will be six members on the team. Along with Cap, Bucky, and the Red Skull, that comes to nine costumed characters, which seems like a heck of a lot. I wonder how much of the focus of the movie will actually be on Captain America! The first half of the film is likely to involve Operation: Rebirth, the death of Professor Erskine, and Rogers joining the USO circuit. If the second half has to work in Bucky, the Red Skull, and the Invaders, that is going to be a very crammed plot!
In the comics, the original Invaders consisted of Captain America (Steve Rogers), his sidekick Bucky (James Barnes), the original android Human Torch (“Jim Hammond”), the Torch’s sidekick Toro (Thomas Raymond), and Namor the Sub-Mariner . Together they fought the forces of Naziism, and the Third Reich.
In the movie universe it looks like The Invaders will be a European team that works alongside Captain America, so I doubt we’ll see many of the original line-up, but more likely we’ll see characters like Union Jack, Spit Fire, and a few new characters. This is probably a good thing, because I dread to see how they could pull off Namor on the big screen!
Paramount Pictures is set to distribute The First Avenger: Captain America on July 22, 2011. The film is being directed by Joe Johnston, produced by Kevin Feige, with a screenplay is being written by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely. No cast members have yet been announced.
