Script Problems Postpone Filming of Spider-Man 4 - Release Date Pushed Back [Updated]
Deadline.com has revealed that problems with the script for Spider-Man 4 have pushed back the start date for filming on the movie, meaning that it is highly unlikely that the film will hit cinemas on it’s original release date of May 11th, 2011.
According to the article, sources at Sony informed Deadline that Sam Raimi “hated” the script, and they are now waiting for a new version from screenwriter Alvin Sargent, who wrote Spider-Man 2 & 3 .
Sony has informed actors and crew that the film will no longer begin filming in February 2010, and they do not currently know when filming will start. According to Deadline’s sources, they still plan to release the movie during the Summer of 2011, but the release date is more likely to be some time in July.
UPDATE: The Hollywood reporter is claiming that the script issue is actually a dispute between Raimi and Sony over what villain will be in the movie. Apparently Raimi wants to have the Vulture act as the primary antagonist in the film, while the studio is pushing for a romantic sub-plot involving the Black Cat, in addition to another villain.
